This Weekend: Stokin’ the Fire BBQ at Sloss
We’re known for many things in the South – hospitality, football, and BBQ. This weekend, take your family to Stokin’ the Fire BBQ at Sloss Furnaces to taste the best BBQ in Birmingham. It is the perfect way to spend a Friday evening or Saturday, particularly after the first week of school. There truly is something for everyone at this event. For Mom – everyone is entertained and fed in the shadows of Sloss (and exhausted so early bed times for you). For Dad, there is an abundance of BBQ equipment, sauces, rubs and the general atmosphere of a tailgate. For the young kids, Sloss has organized an amazing Kid Zone that should completely exhaust even the most active. For the teens/tweens, the food, live music and iron pour seem “cool” enough.
Here are the details.
Dates/Time: Friday, August 20th (6pm-11pm) and Saturday, August 21st (11am-11pm)
Location: Historic Sloss Furnaces.
Event Description: A world class BBQ competition sanctioned by the
prestigious Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS). There will be over 80 local BBQ teams competing in two divisions: backyard grillers (graded by KCBS judges), and the People’s Choice competition (judged by the public). The event also includes an iron pour by the metal arts staff, live music, Cajun dancing, and beer tastings.
The Kid Zone will be open from 6pm to 10pm on Friday and from 11am to 9pm on Saturday. It looks amazing. Beyond the requisite inflatables, this kid area will include face painting, misting tents, a DJ, photographer, a Treasure Island sand pit, and a few carnival games. In keeping with the location, kids can also buy a scratch block to create a cast iron tile later in the day at the metal arts iron pour.
Notes for Mom: You can bring chairs, but food and drinks are not allowed. It’s probably a good idea to pack the wet wipes, sunscreen, hats and don’t forget the bib for Dad.
Be sure to order your tickets online. Ticket prices: $10/Friday, $15/Saturday, $5 plus tax for Children ages 5-12. Free for children under 5. VIP passes available also. All proceeds from the event will benefit the restoration and preservation of Sloss Furnaces National Historic Landmark.
