Rickwood Classic Set for May 30th with Baseball MVP Dale Murphy
The 17th Annual Rickwood Classic is set for 12:30pm, Wednesday, May 30th at the Historic Rickwood Field. Celebrated nationally as a must-attend baseball game, this year’s event will celebrate “War Time Baseball”. The matchup between the Birmingham Barons and the Chattanooga Lookouts (Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers) will be highlighted by the following:
- Appearance and autographs by Former two-time MVP and Atlanta Braves star Dale Murphy
- Players for the Barons and Lookouts will wear uniforms from the early 1940s featuring the Hale America “Health” patch which was worn by teams during that era.
- Celebration honoring local veterans and former baseball players
The theme of this year’s Classic, “War Time Baseball”, will focus on baseball’s connection to America’s war-time history. The sport’s connection to wartime is fascinating for all ages. During World War II and the Korean War, hundreds of baseball players served in America’s armed forces including Hall of Famers Ted Williams, Bob Feller and Warren Spahn. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt insisted in a letter to the Commissioner of Baseball that the season should continue during the conflict for the morale of the nation.
A beautiful afternoon at Rickwood Field will certainly be good for your morale as well. Join this memorable celebration with your family. It’s an important tribute to Birmingham and a great way to kickoff summer.
