Climb Walls, Get Fit and Have Fun
It all began with the rock wall at iJump. My 6-yr old daughter scaled the rock wall during a birthday party and declared, “I love rock climbing.” For months, I’d planned to explore this new interest and today, after months of good intentions, we walked through the door of First Avenue Rocks. What a blast. You’ve got to try this!
On Saturdays from 10am until 2pm, kids can enjoy Bouldering ($12) or Kids Belay ($15). The difference between the two is a harness and a professional guiding your child by rope. To my surprise, they put a harness on my 4yr old as quickly as my 6 yr old. For 1.5 hours, I watched my daughters take turns climbing the walls (literally, for a change). They left sweaty, tired and confident. My only regret was that I was not appropriately dressed to climb and get a little exercise myself. There are so few places where the whole family can exercise together but this is it. We are the greatest influence on the health of our children and the next time we visit, our family will scale the walls together.
Rock climbing is a great sport for kids. In addition to the obvious physicalbenefits and fun, children learn to cooperate and respect other climbers and they must be disciplined, focused and responsible. For my daughters, it seemed that they walked out of First Avenue Rocks just a little bit taller. They were proud to have achieved something based on the strength of their body and mind.
In addition to Saturday mornings, First Avenue Rocks is starting an after-school program for kids ages 8 and up. Classes begin September 20thand will continue for 8 weeks on Monday or Wednesday nights from 4pm-6pm. Otherwise, enjoy the more casual experience of the Saturday free climb.
First Avenue Rocks is located at 2417 1st Avenue South. Phone: 205-320-2277. They also provide space and entertainment for birthday parties.
