Best Booths for Moms at The Market

The Junior League of Birmingham’s The Market is October 14 – 16 and it’s your chance to get a head start on holiday shopping and plain ol’ girl time. If you’re going, here are four of the best booths to visit:

  1. Under Wraps, booths 602-604 – assuming you haven’t already bought more than you can use through your school’s fundraiser, buy yourself some signature wrap as cute as any boutique’s. The polka-dot fold-up boxes are just precious and can hold unusual shapes like those hand-painted ornaments the kids will be making. This vendor is cash only*.
  2. Alabama Goods ,booth 510 -This vendor is a previous BirminghamMom find that sells the best of Alabama-made originals.Their Alabama-shaped cutting boards make a great gift for an Alabama native who would love to be reminded of home.
  3. J Allens, booths 300-302- this merchant has a keen eye for great holiday decorations and I’m still kicking myself that I didn’t grab a gorgeous wreath holder when I saw it last year. Although all the vendors replenish during the sale, J Allen’s will be picked over early owing to her popular choices.
  4. Sew Precious, booths 703-704- Fun kiddie clothes and accessories with colorful fabrics and coordinating appliques. If you’re short on time, remember you can always visit the Sew Precious stores in Patton Creek or Chelsea and take your time making a selection.
  5. Gourmet Foods – various – Hostess alert! Make some great party dips or winter soups with the mixes that are available.  Serving a key lime cream cheese ball with graham crackers for spreading is a dead giveaway you shopped The Market (and I’ll enjoy every bite).

You may find The Market to be as much a women’s social as anything, so be prepared to run into acquaintances (i.e., sweatpants not recommended). The Market is also a great venue for getting out with your sister or neighbor to grab a bite at the Community Dish Cafe and get into the mood for the holidays. On the other hand, if you need to do some serious shopping, visit during late afternoons and before the evening crowd.

There is a bag check so you don’t have to drag around your purchases, but do arrive with an empty car trunk. Last year, a vendor sold rugs that surprised some folks into returning with a bigger vehicle. (Speaking of car trunks, note that The Market is stroller-free until Friday at 2 p.m.).

The Market takes place at the Cahaba Grand off Hwy 280. Admission tickets are $12 each (children 12 and under do not need tickets) and all proceeds benefit the community programs of the Junior League of Birmingham.
