A Book of One’s Own – Birmingham’s Biggest Book Drive

Gather books to donate April 1 – 15, 2011

My guess is that none of us have to be convinced of the importance of books to a child’s life. We cherish the times we have spent rocking and reading Goodnight Moon or repeating Caps for Sale! No doubt your kids have a basket or shelf that serves as their own private library.

But not every child in Birmingham has a book of his own to read, let alone a selection of books. Birmingham’s Biggest Book Drive, now in its third year, seeks to change that by getting a book into into the hands and homes of these children.

BirminghamMoms, there are many ways you can help with this virtual book drive. For every dollar donated, a book will be purchased and distributed to a child in Birmingham. One dollar! That’s a great return on a small investment.

Consider what you can do:

* Donate online now

* Donate a new or gently used book at Birmingham area Starbucks and Books-A-Million locations April 1 – 14 (start going through your children’s books now and you’ll probably have several ready to donate by April)

* Volunteer to read at a Birmingham elementary school on Birmingham Reads Day, April 14, 2011, at 1 p.m. Volunteers will be reading to EVERY GRADE FROM K – 5TH GRADE CLASSROOMS IN EVERY BIRMINGHAM CITY SCHOOL on that afternoon. How great would it be to be a part of that?

It’s so easy to sign up. Besides, we’re in top form for reading to kids at this stage of our lives.

Birmingham’s Biggest Book Drive is sponsored by The Children’s Literacy Guild, Better Basics, The Literacy Council, and the Junior League of Birmingham.
