Open a magazine, turn on the television or simply walk through the mall — images of women in revealing clothes, vulnerable positions and perfect bodies are everywhere. If you are a Birmingham Mom with daughters, you have probably already heard a body image statement or certainly negotiated with her about appropriate clothing.
The award-winning and highly acclaimed film, Miss Representation, is showing this week at The Edge Theatre in Birmingham. The film poignantly demonstrates the impact of this messaging on a woman’s ability to take on leadership roles, how the media portrays female leaders differently and the impact of media images on our daughters (and also ourselves as mothers).
Marian Wright Edelman is quoted on their website as follows,
“You can’t be what you can’t see.”
Thank you to the Leading Edge Institute and Girlspring for their leadership bringing this film to the Birmingham area.
Screenings occur on February 15th and 16th at 5pm and 7:30pm and again on February 19th at 2pm. Tickets can be purchased online and for a slightly higher price at the door.
