Birmingham Farmer’s Market: 2013 Guide

Local! Local! Local! It’s all the rage these days and, fortunately, very easy for families to find local produce throughout the summer.  Here is your guide to Birmingham’s Farmers Markets.

Alabama Farmers Market – In operation since 1956, the Alabama Farmers Market is located at 344 Finley Avenue and is open 7 days/week, 24 hours/day.   The Alabama Farmers Market hosts local vendors throughout the summer season.  Most vendors are open from 6am until 5pm. Pepper Place Market –  Located on 2nd Avenue South between 28th and 29th streets, Pepper Place market opened on April 13th and will continue on Saturdays from 7am-12 noon through December.  At the peak of summer, Pepper Place may have as many as 30 farmers and that many more booths for arts, crafts and restaurants.  Live music and chef demonstrations are regular so check their calendar of events and make your plans.

West Homewood Farmer’s Market – Opens June 1st through July 27th, the West Homewood Farmer’s Market will host farmers, arts & crafts vendors and restaurants each Saturday from 8am-12 noon (live music from 9:30-11:30).   Special note: include a bathing suit for kids activities and check out their site for specific events.  Click here for directions.

The Summit Market – Sponsored by Urban Cookhouse, The Summit (in front of Urban Cookhouse and Pottery Barn) will host the 2nd Annual market including local farmers, kids activities and crafts from 3pm-7pm on Thursdays beginning May 16th – August 8th.

Eastlake Farmer’s Market – The Eastlake Farmers Market opens May 4th with the Strawberry Festival and continues each Saturday until October (8am-noon).  Located at the corner of 2nd Avenue South and 78th Street in Eastlake (near Ruffner Mountain), this market provides essential, local produce to senior citizens as well as great produce for your table.  The market will host chef demonstrations and kids activities throughout the summer as well.  Accepts SNAP/EBT.

Railroad Park Market –  Grow Alabama and the Farmhouse of Homewood will host Farmstands on the Railroad each Thursday beginning May 9th from 3:30-7pm.

Mt. Laurel Farm School – In partnership with Jones Valley Urban Farm, the Town of Mt. Laurel enjoys a 25-acre farm adjacent to the community.  Fresh produce from the farm is sold daily from 10am-4pm.  For more information, call 205-439-7213.

Valleydale Farmers Market – Open May 18th through August 31st from 8am until noon.  Located at 4601 Valleydale Road, this market is a Freshfully pickup location (sign up for a weekly box of veggies, it’s AWESOME) and includes many local artisans and vendors.
